According to a new study drinking coffee regularly can help you live longer.

The study looked at half a million people from the UK to see if those with genetic variations that can affect how they metabolise caffeine live longer. It found that those who drink eight or more cups per day had a lower risk of death.

However, the team behind the study stops short of suggesting a reason why coffee might help people live longer. The study notes that the results are based on observational data. Therefore they cannot prove that coffee actually causes people to live longer.

This is actually the second study in as many years which found the same result. The first was shared in August 2017. That study found that people whose coffee consumption was four or more cups each day had a 64% lower risk of mortality than those that never or rarely drank coffee. In addition, the chance of death decreased by 22% for every two cups consumed each day.

Again, though, that study refuses to give any suggestion as to why this trend might be.

Since the rise of Starbucks in the mid-1990s, there’s been a surge of interest in coffee. The global coffee market is worth a figure of around $100bn according to Ronan Stafford, a food and drink analyst from GlobalData. He notes that that figure is just regarding coffee beans and does not factor in coffee shops or the beans being made into hot drinks by corporate buyers. Stafford explains:

“The market has gone through a long period of premiumisation, as chains such as Starbucks have helped establish a mature coffee culture in most countries.

“There’s a large number of coffee connoisseurs to target, and we’ve seen home delivery services disrupt snacking markets (such as Graze), meal kit markets (such as Blue Apron), and beauty markets (such as Birchbox).

“Home delivery services for coffee aren’t new – plenty have tried in the past, but have struggled to successfully scale their business models. However, the success of home delivery specialists for so many other categories shows that coffee’s time may have come.”

Like many things, this has led to coffee subscription services. For those unfamiliar with the practice, customers pay a monthly fee and have coffee delivered to them. This can be an ideal way to experience different coffees from around the world, or just a convenient way to have luxury coffee delivered directly to your door.

To help you get the coffee you need to live longer, Verdict has scoured the internet to find the most popular and talked-about coffee subscriptions in the world. We’re focusing on the UK and the USA, since that’s where the majority of our readers come from, however, some of these services do deliver worldwide.
