Fingerprints Card, a Sweden-based biometrics company, has partnered with Visa to test a dual-interface biometric payment card in the US.
Together with Mountain America Credit Union, the Swedish company will launch a dual-interface (chip- and contactless-enabled) payment card.
Mountain American Credit Union clients can enroll in the programme online. As for point of sale merchants, there will be no change in infrastructure.
Upon enrolling for fingerprint, the cardholders only needs to put their finger on the card to authenticate their identity and start payment.
Similarly, Bank of Cyprus has partnered with digital security company Gemalto to issue a biometric EMV card which will be provided by Fingerprint Card.
The new biometric card is also expected to speed up the checkout process compared to PIN or signature authentication.
Fingerprints Card senior vice president of business line smartcards Thomas Rex said: “Collaboration is key in the smartcard and payments ecosystem. We are proud to be part of these first-of-its-kind market trials with Visa, the world’s leader in digital payments.
“This signifies that we are entering the next phase in the execution of our strategy for dual-interface biometric payment cards.”
