MasterCard has launched its Identity Check Mobile, a new payment app that uses biometrics such as fingerprints or facial recognition to verify a cardholder’s identity to simplifying online shopping, in Europe.
Eliminating the need to remember passwords, the new biometric app is currently available for European consumers. It will be rolled out across the globe in phased manner in 2017.
Cardholders can verify their identity by using the fingerprint scanner on their smartphone or through facial recognition technology by taking a ‘selfie’ photo.
The technology is now being introduced across 12 markets in Europe, including the UK, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden.
MasterCard believes that its Identity Check Mobile app will expand the company’s commitment to constantly improving online payment security.
