The value marked an increase of 4837.1% over the previous month and a rise of 286.4% when compared with the last 12-month average of $6.02bn.
In terms of number of deals, the sector saw a rise of 92.3% over the last 12-month average with 50 deals against the average of 26 deals.
In value terms, North America led the activity with deals worth $21.58bn.
Payments industry deals in May 2019: Top deals
The top five payments deals accounted for 98.8% of the overall value during May 2019.
The combined value of the top five payments deals stood at $22.97bn, against the overall value of $23.24bn recorded for the month. The top announced payments deal tracked by GlobalData in May 2019 was $21.5bn merger of Global Payments and Total System Services.
In second place was the $889m acquisition of SafeCharge International Group by Nuvei and in third place was Andreessen Horowitz, Baillie Gifford &, BlackRock, Lead Edge Capital Management, Lone Pine Capital and Vitruvian Partners’ $292m private equity deal with TransferWise.
The $230m venture financing of Checkout by Blossom Capital, DST Global, Endeavor Catalyst, GIC and Insight Venture Management and Creandum, Kinnevik and Stripes Group’s venture financing of Pleo Technologies for $56m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
