UnionPay International has introduced its host card emulation (HCE) and tokenisation based mobile payment service, QuickPass, in Canada, which marks the debut of the service in North America.
The launch of UnionPay HCE mobile QuickPass is supported by a number of daily-spending merchants mainly restaurants, hotels, retail outlets, supermarkets, and convenient stores in Canada.
Users can pay using their UnionPay QuickPass chip cards or mobile QuickPass-enabled smartphones at the contactless terminals at the merchants’ outlets.
No signature is required when paying less than CAD100 ($78) with UnionPay debit cards, and no PIN or signature is needed when paying less than CAD100 ($78) with UnionPay credit cards.
Mobile QuickPass supports offline contactless payment with mobile devices such as smartphones and online payment.
Currently, UnionPay cards are accepted both online and offline in Canada. Over 85% of the local ATMs and more than 70,000 merchants accept UnionPay cards.
