UnionPay International and Australia-based banking major Westpac have agreed to introduce online payment service in the country.
Rottnest Express will become the first merchant to have trial run of UnionPay online payment. Later, Westpac will enable more online merchants to accept UnionPay.
The partnership will enable tourists to buy tickets using UnionPay cards at terminal counters of Rottnest Express, as well as book yacht tickets and island entertainments online in advance.
The latest move is the next step of their collaboration, which begun in April 2014 when two parties signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement under the witness of government leaders of Australia and China.
Until now, Westpac has enabled all its ATMs and POS terminals in Australia and islands countries such as Fiji to accept UnionPay.
All of its 100,000 POS terminals in Australia support UnionPay mobile QuickPass, which enables cardholders to pay with their mobile phones.
