Ron Wheatcroft is Technical Manager for Swiss Re’s UK life and health business.
He is the author of its Group Watch reports and co-author of its series of Term & Health Watch reports. He leads Swiss Re’s work with UK legislators and regulators, seeking ways to ensure the primary market works well for consumers and for financial institutions.

Andrew Bulley, Partner, Centre for Regulatory Strategy, Deloitte LLP

Andrew Bulley joined Deloitte in October 2016 from the Bank of England, where he was, most recently, the Director of Life Insurance Supervision. Between 2014 and 2016 he was a UK voting member of the Board of Supervisors of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (“EIOPA”). In a career with the Bank of England and Financial Services Authority stretching over 27 years, Andrew has held senior roles in the supervision of life and general insurers, the London wholesale insurance underwriting and broking markets, retail and investment banks, asset managers, and IFAs.

 

 

Melissa Collett, Professional Standards Director, Chartered Insurance Institute (CII)

Melissa Collett is Professional Standards Director at the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), leading its professional standards, ethics and conduct activity as a united profession across insurance and financial planning. She is also responsible for the professional body’s legal affairs, risk management, disciplinary matters and governance. She is keen to raise awareness of best practice and drive ethical behaviour through engagement with the profession and external stakeholders.

Melissa has an extensive background in consumer insurance and legal issues. She spent over a decade at the Financial Ombudsman Service, was a Director at Fairer Finance and sits as a Tribunal Judge. She is also qualified solicitor, and specialised in insurance law at Hogan Lovells. She is a frequent speaker at insurance conference and events, sits on judging panels, and is the author of numerous articles and publications on consumer insurance law subjects.

William Conner, Insurance Partner, PwC UK

William is an expert in business and technology transformation. He specialises in delivering strategic change programmes to Life, Pension and Health insurance clients. He has advised on and delivered major programmes of technology enabled transformation, next generation outsourcing, digital strategy development, and strategic cost reduction. William has been at PwC for 9 years and leads PwC’s Insurance Operations Practice. He has supported clients to significantly improve their businesses; investing to differentiate and stripping out unnecessary costs. He also advises on and delivers digital transformation programmes including Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Data, Insight & Analytics and Digital Strategy. William lives in Somerset and is kept busy with three small children and lots of cycling!

 

David Cowan, Leader on Conduct of Business Policy Team, Consumer Protection Department, European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority

David Cowan is the Leader of the Conduct of Business Policy Team in the Consumer Protection Department at EIOPA. He has been working at EIOPA since its establishment on 1 January 2011. Prior to this date, he was working in the Secretariat of EIOPA’s predecessor body, CEIOPS from April 2009 to end of December 2010 as a secondee from the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA)’s EU/ International division. David’s current responsibilities at EIOPA cover ensuring, as a project manager, that EIOPA delivers effectively on the different empowerments/tasks envisaged in the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD). However, he is also working on a variety of consumer protection issues such as the PRIIPs KID and PEPP Regulation. David first joined the FSA in November 2004, working initially in its Retail Policy Division on the implementation of MiFID into the FSA’s Conduct of Business Sourcebook before being seconded to the Investment Funds division of the German Financial Supervisor, BaFin from end of March 2008 to end of March 2009. Prior to joining the FSA, David worked for 7 years for the UK law firm, DAC Beachcroft LLP, including a period of 4 years spent in the firm’s Brussels office working in the field of EU financial services law, competition law and public procurement law.

Trevor Davis, Managing Director, Life and Health, Instanda

Trevor joined Instanda at the start of 2018 as Managing Director Life & Health Business. His focus is to enable Insurers, Carriers and Brokers to create, launch and service products and clients better, easier, faster and at a lower cost by leveraging INSTANDA’s digital front-end, underwriting and administration platform and its experience with over 50 existing clients and partners. Trevor has over 20 years’ experience in Life & Pensions, having been CEO for SwissRe’s Life and Pension servicing business with over 5m customers with £80bn assets. Previously, he was a Managing Director for Capita, HCL and Unisys Life & Pension Outsourcing where he serviced leading UK Insurers. Trevor also worked in Banking and Finance with KPMG Financial Services and has worked extensively overseas in Europe, US and India. He lived in Switzerland for 3 years whilst working for Leica Plc, a high-end optics and data management business. Trevor is also a Non-Executive working and advising several FinTech / InsurTech organisations. Trevor is a qualified Chartered Accountant and has been an Approved Person with the FSA, FCA and PRA. He is a keen sportsman and as a junior competed in athletics at an international level.

Michael Dritsas, Head of Global Proposition Development and Services, Global Life and Health, Allianz

Michael Dritsas is Head of Global Proposition Development and Services for Global Life and Health at Allianz. Michael has held this role since July 2017, and before this, from 2013, he was Head of Individual Life Product Development and Personal Financial Services, also at Allianz. Michael has worked in various roles at Allianz since 2009, and before that worked at Dresdner Bank. Michael holds a Master’s degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Zurich, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Corporate Finance from the Swiss Banking Institute.

 

 

Andy Gallon, Head of Life Insurance, Barclays

Andy Gallon is the Head of Life Insurance for Barclays. With 10 years’ experience as an adviser in multiple institutions and part of the front line leadership team for Barclays, he has worked in the Life Insurance product team for 4 years, leading the team for the last year. Andy has overseen the transition of partner and launch of the new Simple Life proposition in October, maintaining the BSI Kitemark for the product. Andy has a BA in Finance and Management, he lives in Solihull with his wife and 2 young children.

 

 

Peter Hamilton, Head of Market Management, Zurich

Peter is Head of Market Management at Zurich, where he is responsible for the development of new products and propositions for the Retail Life and GI business.  With a background in Marketing, previous companies include Legal and General, Allied Dunbar, London and Manchester and Friends Life. He sits on the ABI’s Protection strategy committee and chairs its Long Term Care working party.

 

 

Bernie Hickman, Chief Executive Officer, Legal and General Insurance

 Bernie Hickman is CEO of Legal & General Insurance (LGI), a division that has over 7 million customers in the UK and US, providing life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection to individuals and company employees. In addition a Fintech business team makes strategic investments in Fintech start-ups and collaborates with internal business areas to deliver growth through technology innovation. Bernie joined Legal & General in 1998 from Commercial Union (now Aviva). Between 2005 and 2010 he was Managing Director, Retail Protection during which time he launched the UK Protection digital platform, OLP Connect, that provides market leading self-service functionality and high levels of straight through processing; UK retail protection, through organic growth, now has a market share of 24%. He became MD of Individual Retirement in 2014 and the CEO co-founder of Legal & General Home Finance in 2015 when he led the L&G entry into the Lifetime mortgage market, achieving a 25% market share within 18 months of launching. He has also held the positions of Group Financial Controller, Investor Relations Director and Solvency II Managing Director.

Phil Jeynes, Head of Sales and Marketing, UnderwriteMe

Phil started in financial services straight from school, following his dream of becoming a clerk for a large building society. Having achieved this goal he went on to become a mortgage adviser and through this, discovered the world of Protection. A paucity of imagination has seen Phil become a well known figure in the life insurance sector, with roles in marketing, sales and PR at such leading firms as Direct life and Pensions, Vitality Life and now UnderwriteMe. Away from work he is married with two sons and spends his free time playing, coaching and watching football (in ascending order of proficiency).

 

 

Dean Lamble, Chief Executive Officer, SunLife

Dean Lamble is CEO of SunLife, a financial services brand solely focused on the over 50s UK market. Since joining SunLife he has been responsible for leading the transformation of the SunLife business into the leading Over 50s life insurance brand and new entrant into equity release and general insurance. Prior to SunLife Mr Lamble held a number of general management and strategy positions in technology and financial services. Mr Lamble read his MBA at London Business School.

 

 

 

Heidi McCormack, Chief Executive Officer, Emerald Life

Heidi is a business leader, recognised for her thought leadership on the international stage and her career in investment banking, compliance and as a senior figure in one of the largest, global automotive companies – spending 25 years living and working in Russia. Before co-founding Emerald, Heidi was Executive Director of new business development for General Motors in Russia, one of several positions she’s held globally, spearheading GM’s entry into Russia and becoming a role model for women in the boardroom. Her track record of growing robust businesses drives her vision for Emerald’s growth and her passion for providing Emerald’s customers with the service and insurance protections they deserve, free from inequality. As well as having held various board positions for trade bodies and companies, she regularly lectures in business and academic circles. Educated at John Hopkins University and American University in Cairo, Heidi started her career at Bear Stearns in the emerging markets group, specialising in mergers & acquisitions.

Ian McKenna, Director, Finance & Technology Research Centre

After working for insurance companies and financial advisers including a decade at an independent advice firm he founded in 1995, Ian McKenna set up Financial Technology Research Centre anticipating the fin tech wave by well over a decade. In 2017 he established Digital Wealth Insights to provide consistent analysis of emerging Wealthtech, Insurtech and Regtech firms with a particular focus on regulatory compliance and how such services expand consumer access to financial advice and guidance. Ian travels globally seeking out transformational solutions, as well as leading start-ups in the Insurtech and Regtech sectors.

 

 

Robert Morrison, Global Chief Underwriter, Aviva

Robert Morrison is the Global Chief Underwriter for Aviva’s Health and Protection businesses.   He is a member of the senior leadership team that runs the UK business and is the owner of the Global Underwriting and Claims Standards for the Aviva Group.  Robert also sits on the senior leadership team for Aviva’s data analytics business – Aviva Quantum.   He is a chartered insurer and is a member of the Association of British Insurers Technical Committee where his role is to advise the UK insurance industry on technical underwriting and claim matters.  He is also a mentor for The 30% Club whose aim is to develop a diverse pool of talent for businesses and create a better gender balance within boardrooms. Career highlights include being part of a start-up protection business and leading the integration of the combined protection proposition as part of the Aviva and Friends Life merger.  Robert also spends a lot of time visiting Aviva businesses overseas and his team has recently doubled levels of underwriting automation in Singapore.  In the last 24 months his team has led the roll-out of automated underwriting solutions into a further 5 overseas businesses.

Originally from near Edinburgh, Robert relocated his family 8 years ago to join Aviva and now lives in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.  He is married with 2 teenage children.

Graham Newman, Business Development Manager, Europe, ClaimVantage

Graham has spent most of his career in the business application of technology although he began in education, teaching both English and Mathematics in comprehensive schools in the UK and English as a foreign language at The European University of Cyprus.  He has covered the car industry, engineering, the oil business and for the last 28 years has worked exclusively in insurance and financial services.  He was originating architect for a world-wide Life and Pensions administration system and subsequently its Global Product Manager.  He has been Education and Training manager in several companies and developed and delivered business, technical and high-level consultancy skills courses. In the supply of IT based business solutions he has been responsible for architecture, business development, consultancy, sales support and marketing for both European and global enterprises.   He is currently responsible for business development across Europe for ClaimVantage.

Jesper Ohnemus, Senior Vice President Strategic Business Development, dacadoo

Jesper Ohnemus joined dacadoo in 2012 and has the responsibility for global partnerships with wearables, consumer apps and software partners. Furthermore, he also covers sales in Northern and Eastern Europe to life and health insurance companies and occupational health providers. Jesper has 25 years of business development and marketing management experience from different industries in Scandinavia and Switzerland. Jesper Ohnemus has dual Swiss and Danish citizenship and holds a Bachelor degree in business from University of Southern Denmark and speaks four languages.

 

 

James Tufts, UK Insurance Life and Pensions Leader, EY

James Tufts is a Partner at EY and is UK Life and Pensions Insurance Leader and UK Actuarial Leader, based in London. He has over twenty-five years of insurance experience and has held various industry roles including Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer and worked extensively in Europe and South Africa.He qualified as Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries in 1994 and joined EY originally in 2001 and re-joined in 2016 following two years with Guardian Financial Services. Prior to EY, James has also worked at Towers Watson and Legal and General. He brings the breadth of EY’s services to the insurance sector.

 

 

Lara Varjabedian, Vice President Business Development International, Prenetics

Lara Varjabedian is VP Business Development for Prenetics International. She is responsible for business development mainly through partnerships with Insurers but also enterprises and intermediaries. Lara has 13 years commercial experience in the Insurance Industry. Prior to Prenetics, Lara moved to London in 2015 to join Coface Global Solutions – part of Coface Group – dedicated to global trade credit insurance solutions for multinationals. She spent 3 years as Sales Manager. Prior to that, she spent almost 10 years with Generali Employee Benefits, a strategic unit of Generali Group dedicated to global Employee Benefits solutions for multinationals – Pool and reinsurance to Captive clients. Martin Windle, Head of Strategy and Innovation, AIG Life

Martin Windle is the Head of Strategy and Innovation at AIG Life.  He has a degree in accountancy, but started his career in the mailroom of a publishing house before leading its transformation in the 1990s from traditional paper books to digital reference source.  He then worked to design and build pioneering internet banking and financial services propositions, going on to work as a strategy consultant to a number of well-known names in life, pensions, investments and retail banking.  He starting working with AIG Life in 2015, joining the permanent staff in his present role at the start of 2017.

Submission rules

Nominees should follow these simple guidelines to ensure that their submission has the best chance of winning:

  1. Submissions can be made either on behalf of your own company or in recognition of a colleague or partner firm.
  2. Maximum of 1,000 words in Word format, no appendices.
  3. Entry must address the award category explicitly, not generic links to web sites, corporate marketing etc.
  4. Submissions should highlight the key differentiator and competitive nature of the project or implementation
  5. It is made explicit the Entrant, Judges and the publication will treat any and all information in strict confidence and any quotes or information to go into the public domain will be pre-cleared by the Entrant.
  6. Submissions made after the publicised cut-off date will be ignored irrespective of their relative merits.
  7. The Editor and Judges reserve the right to make no award for any specific category
  8. The Editor and Judges reserve the right to move a submission to a more appropriate category at their discretion
  9. In submitting for more than one category the submissions must be unique (see 3)

Most Innovative Protection Insurance Intermediary of the Year
This award is open to regulated insurance brokers, financial advisers and intermediaries globally that are serving the life and health insurance market. The judges will be looking for an intermediary that can demonstrate a combination of some or all of the following:

  • How they have responded to demands of consumers with a product/scheme/offering relevant to their needs
  • Top quality service
  • Evidence of any value-added services or support
  • Evidence of product and/or service innovation in the context of profitable growth
  • How a protection insurance intermediary used marketing/technology/social media to increase penetration and maximise the potential of the product/scheme/offering

Most Innovative Life / Health Insurance Start-Up of the Year
Open to any organisation less than three-years-old that can demonstrate success in making a noteworthy contribution to the global life and health insurance market in its short life time.

  • Entrants could be an insurance provider, broker or intermediary that has identified a significant market failing and/or gap and filled it
  • A business that has helped advance the life and health insurance sector using the latest technologies either as a third-party provider or at the consumer interface level
  • The business may not be significantly profitable or fulfilled its objectives to date, but will need to demonstrate a plan that evidences great future potential for investors/customers
  • Evidence must show the strategic objective(s) of the start-up. For example, the success to date in meeting the objectives; the results/outcomes

Most Innovative Back Office Service Provider of the Year
This award is open to providers of back office, administration solutions and outsourcing for life and health insurers and reinsurers, as well as brokers, advisers and intermediaries operating in the protection insurance space.

  • The judges will be looking for evidence of how the provider’s services are enabling speed to market for its clients and enhancing their competitive capabilities
  • Evidence will be required that the provider’s technology, back office capability and administration solutions have accelerated its clients’ digital strategies and are supporting their transition to a digital world
  • Clear evidence that its services and methodology have helped life insurance players and intermediaries to innovate, remain compliant and achieve their business goals
  • Added value for clients by reducing costs through efficiency and effective recommendations

Digital Innovation of the Year – Insurers
This award will focus on an innovative and effective use of technology by life and health insurers and reinsurers as part of the wider shift to digitalisation.

  • The judges will be looking for evidence of success in applying the latest technologies and generating profitable business in response to the increasing digital shift
  • Evidence will be required that the technology innovation is original, market-changing and will be long lasting
  • Evidence of improved customer engagement and personalisation
  • Evidence of enhanced customer service and an integrated adoption of tools such as big data and analytics

Digital Innovation of the Year –Technology Firms
This award will focus on an innovative and effective use of technology by technology firms and service providers that have built innovative technology and software, which is driving the wider shift to digitalisation in life and health insurance. It is open to any organisation providing an insurance technology or software service directly to the life / health insurance market.

  • The judges will be looking for evidence the technology / software firm/ service provider has responded innovatively to the demands of the life and health insurance market
  • Evidence will be required that the technology innovation is original, market-changing and will be long lasting
  • Evidence will be required how the innovation significantly improves the experience for the customer and insurer
  • Evidence of enhanced business success through their relationship with the insurance market
  • Evidence of consistent levels of service and customer satisfaction, whether those customers are in business-to-business or business-to-consumer relationships.

Advisory Firm of the Year
This award is open to any organisation providing an advisory, intelligence, professional or technical service directly to the life insurance market .The judges will be looking for:

  • Evidence a business has responded innovatively to the demands of the market
  • Evidence of consistent levels of service and customer satisfaction, whether those customers are in business-to-business or business-to-consumer relationships.
  • Evidence of enhanced business success through their relationship with the insurance market.

Most Innovative Health Insurer of the Year
This award is open to health insurers globally whose innovations over the past year are substantially improving the user experience, as well as increasing the health insurer’s business efficiency and profitability

  • Health insurers must evidence innovations in the following areas: product; distribution channel; market segmentation; customer experience; and marketing / brand engagement
  • The judges will be seeking evidence that the health insurance innovation is market-changing and will be long lasting
  • Evidence will be required to demonstrate how the innovation significantly improves the user experience
  • The judges will also be looking to understand how the innovation has reduced complexity for the insurer, thereby lowering costs and increasing their ability to respond to change

Most Innovative Life Reinsurer of the Year
This award is open to life reinsurers globally whose innovations over the past year are substantially improving the user experience, as well as increasing the life reinsurer’s business efficiency and profitability

  • Life reinsurers must evidence innovations in the following areas: product; distribution channel; market segmentation; customer experience; and marketing / brand engagement
  • The judges will be seeking evidence that the life reinsurance innovation is market-changing and will be long lasting
  • Evidence will be required to show how the innovation significantly improves the user experience
  • The judges will also be looking to understand how the innovation has reduced complexity for the reinsurer, thereby lowering costs and increasing their ability to respond to change

Most Innovative Life Insurer of the Year – UK
This award is open to life insurers UK based whose innovations over the past year have substantially improved the user experience, as well as increasing the life insurer’s business efficiency and profitability

  • Life insurers must evidence innovations in the following areas: product; distribution channel; market segmentation; customer experience; and marketing / brand engagement
  • The judges will be seeking evidence that the life insurance innovation is market-changing and will be long lasting
  • Evidence will be required how the innovation significantly improves the user experience
  • The judges will also be looking to understand how the innovation has reduced complexity for the insurer, thereby lowering costs and increasing their ability to respond to change

Most Innovative Life Insurer of the Year – International
This award is open to life insurers Internationally based whose innovations over the past year have substantially improved the user experience, as well as increasing the life insurer’s business efficiency and profitability

  • Life insurers must evidence innovations in the following areas: product; distribution channel; market segmentation; customer experience; and marketing / brand engagement
  • The judges will be seeking evidence that the life insurance innovation is market-changing and will be long lasting
  • Evidence will be required how the innovation significantly improves the user experience
  • The judges will also be looking to understand how the innovation has reduced complexity for the insurer, thereby lowering costs and increasing their ability to respond to change

Most Engaging Customer Experience
This award identifies life and health insurers and reinsurers from around the world that are setting new standards in customer experience and engagement. The customer experience provided should be exceptional. It should allow both the life insurance player and client to stand out from their peers

  • The winning life and health insurer / reinsurer / solutions provider in this category will have clearly implemented an innovative and truly engaging customer experience initiative that has enhanced performance for the client.
  • In particular, the judges will be looking for proof of the impact of the innovative strategy on retention levels and client satisfaction

Best Use of Social Media
This award identifies a social media campaign by a life and health insurer / reinsurer / solutions provider that fulfils its initial objectives through the most imaginative use of social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google Plus etc. It can be a stand-alone social media campaign or one that is part of a larger PR initiative

  • The judges will be looking for examples of social media campaigns that have effectively created and distribute a message that has generated engagement, understanding and trust.
  • It should have created a positive perception of the company among its target audience
  • Evidence will be required of how the campaign has increased the number of followers on social media and boosted website traffic

Best Business Transformation
This award identifies a life and health insurer / reinsurer / solutions provider that has significantly transformed its business over the past year with positive results

  • The judges will be looking for examples of a clear strategy and change management plan that has produced positive results in a measurable way, such as increased revenue / greater efficiencies / a new range of products / enhanced customer service.
  • Evidence should be provider how the player brought together stakeholders from across the organisation to roll out the business transformation
  • The winner will explain how it has communicated the change internally to overcome any resistance and inertia, as well as communicating the benefits of the change to its clients

The Diversity Award
This award celebrates a company or a project that has embraced diversity within its operations. Diversity refers to gender equality initiatives and / or efforts to boost ethnic diversity and engagement. It could also be viewed in the context of encouraging more young people into the company / insurance sector.
The judges will be looking for a project / initiative that has:

  • Clear and measurable objectives
  • Can demonstrate how they have embraced the principles of diversity within their operations
  • The initiative should demonstrate a coherent and integrated approach
  • Evidence that the initiative is improving business performance and customer service and engagement

Personality of the year
This special award will be presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the global life and health insurance and reinsurance market over the last 12 months, whether through the advancement of the organisation that employs them; or the wider life and health insurance and reinsurance industry.

  • The winner could be someone who has led a sea change within a business through their strategic vision and/or a successful acquisition;
  • The winner could also be someone who has helped the wider sector through their engagement with stakeholders, regulators and politicians to affect a notable change that benefits the industry’s standing in the eyes of the public and commerce
  • The winner will have driven new developments across the industry
