Private Banker International Greater China Awards 2014

  • Private Banker International, the leading journal for the global wealth management industry, has announced the winners for its Greater China Awards 2014.
  • Award winners were announced and presented at the Private Banker International Greater China Awards Presentation on Wednesday, 28 May 2014 at The Grand Hyatt Hotel, Hong Kong.

Hong Kong, 29 May 2014 – Private Banker International (PBI), the leading journal for the global wealth management industry announced the winners for the 2014 Private Banker International Greater China Awards, held in conjunction with the PBI Greater China Summit.

The PBI awards are regarded as the most credible in the industry, voted by the industry for the industry.

Ruben Kempeneer, Regional Director of Timetric said: “Nominations this year continued to show enhanced sophistication in the service models and respective propositions of private banks with operations in Greater China. Not only have institutions recognised the cognitive changes occurring in these significant markets, they are clearly appreciative of the need for adaptive models to remain relevant to the needs of the clients and the transformative reform of the region.”

“This year’s winners exhibited a clear direction in their improved strategies, highlighting the need for close integration across markets and really honed in on their strengths as institutions respectively. This proved successful in a challenging time for the industry when identifying your core proposition to clients is vital to remaining competitive.”

The winners and finalists in each of the categories are outlined in Annex 1.

Our regional director’s comments on the winners are outlined in Annex 2.

Private Banker International Greater China Award Winners 2014 – Quote from Regional Director, Timetric
(Please attribute the following quotes to Ruben Kempeneer, Regional Director ofTimetric)

Best Private Bank in China
Winner
China Merchants Bank
“With 32 private banking centres in 27 cities by end 2013, CMB has established a broad reach and become a leader in China’s banking sphere. Private banking clients and AUM has increased consistently over the six years of its existence.  In 2013, the private bank made many efforts to improve and expand its open product platform, promote investment consulting service and bringing further discretionary trusts and cross-border financial services for their clients.”

Best Private Bank in China (Foreign)
Winner
UBS China
“UBS was the first Swiss lender to convert from a bank branch to a Wholly Foreign Owned Bank (WFOB) in China in July 2012, and it has also been actively involved in drafting wealth management laws in the region alongside the China Banking Regulatory Commission. Headquartered in Beijing, UBS offers domestic wealth management services in China holistically through a dual platform: UBS Securities and UBS (China). The bank’s strategy – to offer an integrated wealth, asset management and banking service – has allowed it to go from strength to strength in the region.”

Best Private Bank in Hong Kong
Winner
Bank of East Asia
“Within a short span of 8 years in its private banking advisory services, Bank of East Asia has shown consistent growth in its AUM and client base, continuously enhancing their products and services suite. The bank holds strong connectivity across the region, with essential ties in mainland China, with one of the largest branch networks of any foreign bank in the market. This holds a key competitive advantage, at a time when cross-border service and expertise is a critical need for clients today.”

Best Private Bank in Hong Kong (Foreign)
Winner
BNP Paribas Wealth Management
“Exhibiting wealth management par excellence, BNP has proven worthy of this accolade for a second year in a row. Among strong competition in this category, the bank has risen above its contenders with commendable AUM growth, and preserving key banking relationships, especially in the UHNW space. This year, BNP also showed a considerable 39 per cent increase in their RM population in Hong Kong, who receive rigorous training and uphold the quality and potential of the business in this key market.”

Best Private Bank in Taiwan
Winner
Taishin Bank
“With the remarkable enhancements to its private banking services this year, Taishin Bank has shown that it truly understands the needs of its HNW clientele. The family wealth services program and the business owners wealth services program respectively are fitting examples of Taishin’s innovative approach to evolve its private banking offering. Holding one of the largest bases of professional investors in Taiwan, the bank has an established strength in market, and its improved capabilities make it worthy of this accolade.”

Best Private Bank in Taiwan (Foreign)
Winner
Credit Suisse
“Credit Suisse’s adoption of a ‘One Greater China Franchise’ has certainly posed as a key competitive advantage for the bank, and has made it rise above their industry peers in Taiwan. Since the emergence of this strategy in 2012, the bank has clearly shown an improved service model for relationship managers to better serve clients with converged business and wealth interests in Greater China.”

Service proposition

Best Renminbi Offering
Winner
HSBC Private Bank

“In 2009, Beijing set in motion reforms to expand CNH use in cross-border trade settlement. In August 2010 HSBC Private Bank launched its CNH product and service platform and the lender now provides a diversified banking service, including Treasury Services, Foreign Exchange Products, Dim Sum Bonds, Mutual Funds and Structured Products. HSBC is worthy of this award as it was the first private bank in Hong Kong to provide offshore deliverable CNH spot for corporate clients, and the only private bank to participate in the first CNH bond fund. It’s the leading underwriter and lead manager in Hong Kong’s Dim Sum Bond market, with a growing turnover and deposit balance.”

Best Family Office Offering
Winner
Credit Suisse
“Credit Suisse is deserving of this award as it constantly reinvented its Family Office offering in the region. In 2010, Credit Suisse set up a Family Office Hub in Asia, the first ever center of this kind globally, where UHNW families can incubate their own Single Family Offices alongside other families with the same ambition. In January 2014, with the opening of the Credit Suisse Wealth Institute, the bank’s first such facility in Asia Pacific, it further enhanced its Family Office Services especially in the area of client education.”

Best UHNW Offering
Winner
Credit Suisse
“Credit Suisse’s integrated “Private Investment Banking” model is best suited to serve the needs of UHNW clients as the lender’s One Bank model successfully meets the financing and wealth management needs of Asian UHNW clients who are pre-dominantly first generation entrepreneurs. Credit Suisse has also expanded its UHNW client servicing capabilities and integrated solutions in the last two years, consolidating under a unique Solution Partners specialist unit within Private Banking & Wealth Management. There is also a Credit Advisory team that structures and executes flow lending products ranging from financing secured by financial assets to residential and commercial real estate.”

Best Next-Generation Offering
Winner
HSBC Private Bank
“HSBC Private Bank has worked hard to evolve its Next Generational offering to meet the changing needs of clients. It’s the first bank in Asia to invest in an independent platform for addressing family enterprise issues. The lender doesn’t have a single ‘next gen’ offering but an enmeshed and holistic platform drawing on strengths of multi-disciplinary staff. It is also the first bank to launch an intergenerational women’s focus. HSBC’s signature Next Generation programme for the adult children of its wealthy clients allows networking and learning between thought leaders and participants on topics related to growing, managing and preserving wealth. HSBC also organises regular workshops for this clientele.”

Best Wealth Management Platform
Winner
AG Delta
“An organization with a distinctive approach to serving the private banking industry, AG Delta has clearly demonstrated through its digital wealth solutions and provoking thought leadership, that it understands the needs of private banks. Their flagship AG Capital solution is a riveting example of combining the high touch and low touch needs of the banks’ systems to empower the RM with the right tools to provide the right advice to the right clients.”
