The move is aligned with the defence ministry’s broader objectives outlined in the Strategic Defence Review, focusing on leveraging advanced cloud infrastructure for improved capabilities and secure information processing.

UK MoD Cyber & Specialist Operations Command commander general Sir James Hockenhull said: “The Ministry of Defence is committed to utilising next-generation technology and AI to enhance our operational capabilities and ensure the security of the UK.

“This partnership is a critical component of our digital transformation strategy, and we are pleased to partner with Google Cloud to deliver a secure and resilient cloud environment for our highly sensitive data.”

The sovereign cloud environment will be implemented using Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) air-gapped technology. This platform is specifically designed to handle workloads that require strict data residency and security measures.

It will ensure that the MoD’s sensitive data is stored and managed entirely within UK borders, maintaining full control over the information.

Additionally, this platform will facilitate the integration of Google’s advanced AI and machine learning tools, which aim to improve the MoD’s analytical capabilities and enhance overall operational efficiency.

Google Cloud EMEA president Tara Brady said: “Google Cloud is dedicated to supporting the UK government’s mission to develop a robust and resilient infrastructure and harness the latest technology innovations.

“This partnership will enable the MOD to accelerate its digital modernisation efforts while maintaining the highest levels of security and data sovereignty.”

The agreement is also expected to stimulate job creation, skills development, and growth among start-ups and small to medium enterprises within the UK defence sector.

Under the deal, Google Cloud has already committed substantial inward investment, including hiring a dedicated specialist team in the UK to manage the technology.

In August 2025, Google committed an additional $9bn investment in Virginia by the end of 2026 to enhance cloud and AI infrastructure across the US state.
