Seagate Technology has patented a method for determining expected command completion time (CCT) for hard disk drives (HDDs) by analyzing position error signals (PESs) and off-track limits. If CCT exceeds a threshold, data collection switches to a mirrored HDD. GlobalData’s report on Seagate Technology gives a 360-degree view of the company including its patenting strategy. A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11922024B2) discloses a method for managing data retrieval in a hard disk drive (HDD) system. The method involves receiving position error signals (PESs) for the HDD over a specific time period and calculating the average number of retrieved sectors between occurrences where the PES exceeds the upper off-track limit (UOL). If the required number of revolutions to collect data is above a threshold, data is collected from a mirrored HDD. Additionally, the method includes formulating a data request based on the determined required number of revolutions and determining the probability of PES being above the UOL based on the sigma of the PESs.

Furthermore, the patent describes additional steps such as comparing the required number of revolutions to a threshold, communicating this information to a host system, and requesting data from alternative storage devices for data redundancy. The method also involves operating the HDD to determine the UOL during a storage device certification process. In cases where the required number of revolutions is above a threshold, data can be requested from mirrored HDDs or multiple alternative storage devices using RAID 5 capacity calculations. This innovative method aims to enhance data retrieval efficiency and reliability in HDD systems, ensuring seamless operation and data integrity in various computing environments.
