Microsoft and Salesforce have been ranked as leaders in the ‘low-code’ development landscape by a new report.
GlobalData’s Low-Code Platforms: Competitive Landscape Assessment report states that the success of Microsoft Power Platform and Salesforce Flow application platforms is largely based on the vendors’ ability to evolve their mature low-code technology into a popular user interface (UI) for advanced artificial intelligence (AI) innovations including generative AI (GenAI) and agentic AI. Low-code approaches to software development minimise the extent to which coding is required, instead favouring the likes of pre-built components and drag-and-drop functionality.
Microsoft has invested heavily in the integration of Microsoft Power Platform, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft Copilot Studio. The intent is to provide enterprises with development tools to build custom apps, automate workflows, analyse data and create autonomous multi-agent systems. For developers, GitHub integration brings even more functionality and shortcuts through the high-productivity tools, such as newly enhanced versions of GitHub Copilot, which now claims a 15 million developer community.

Salesforce Flow is the platform upon which Salesforce builds its low-code and process automation and more recently Salesforce Agentforce, autonomous agents for providing more accessible and advanced GenAI capabilities to the app development process. Its newly branded AI Assistant (previously Einstein AI) represents a friendly UI which abstracts data and AI complexities. The latest version of Agentforce emphasises enhanced visibility and observability capabilities via Command Center, and support for open protocol standard MCP through AgentExchange.
Charlotte Dunlap, research director for enterprise technology and services at GlobalData, commented: “Traditional low-code leaders are demonstrating the importance of the user experience to support the emerging AI agent space as they enhance AI assistants to address a new agentic era. The need to remove any red tape from the app modernisation process has never been greater. This stems from the competitive necessity of modernised customer experience and quest for improved IT automations and efficiencies, as well as the need to provide employees with broader access to data and advanced AI capabilities.”
Also worth noting is the report’s inclusion of intelligent automation providers, such as Appian, and their growing role in providing enterprises with low-code platforms that provide employees and customers with greater access to high-productivity tools including agentic process automation (APA). Appian’s platform enhancements support intelligent process automation through AI-powered solutions that orchestrate key business processes, via Agent Studio.
“Low-code-enabled generative AI (GenAI) and intelligent automation innovations coupled with the cloud have created a culture of data ubiquity where data from virtually any source can be accessed and integrated into modern apps,” Dunlap added. “Low-code platforms have demonstrated a prominent role in enterprises’ application modernization process for several years, catering to both professional developers and non-coders/LoB, and IT operations teams.”
