A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11956326B2) discloses a method for determining the location of a client within a private network. The method involves sending multiple STUN BINDING requests from the client through various interfaces to a STUN server connected to the public internet. These requests result in receiving STUN BINDING responses containing public IP addresses mapped by the server to the internet gateways through which the requests exited the private network. Subsequently, location requests are sent to a location server, including the public IP addresses and corresponding private IP addresses, to retrieve geolocation data identifying the physical location of the client within a specified range.

Furthermore, the patent details a communication network comprising a client in a private network, a STUN server, and a location server. The client sends STUN BINDING requests through different internet gateways, receives responses mapping public IP addresses, and sends location requests to the location server for geolocation data retrieval. The location server utilizes tables to map private IP addresses to public IP addresses with precision range values, enabling accurate determination of the client's physical location. The method also includes selecting the geolocation data with the lowest precision range value and transmitting it to an emergency service if needed, showcasing potential applications in emergency response scenarios.
