Under the agreement, GlobalFoundries will provide manufacturing services to TSMC, supporting the CoWoS (Chip on Wafer on Substrate) advanced packaging ecosystem.
The company also plans to expand fabrication capacity at its New York site to meet growing customer demand in sectors such as AI and high-performance computing.
The partnership lays the foundation for future capacity expansion as market needs evolve.
GlobalFoundries expects its Malta facility to become the first in the US to supply silicon interposers for advanced packaging technologies.
This expansion includes support for embedded deep trench capacitor components.
The move aims to provide scale and flexibility in delivering advanced packaging solutions, accommodating evolving product generations for various customers.
GlobalFoundries CMOS business senior vice president Ed Kaste said: “Advanced packaging is becoming increasingly critical to delivering the performance, power efficiency and scale required for next-generation AI systems.
“By providing manufacturing service using GF’s trusted US manufacturing footprint, we are creating a secure, scalable source of essential advanced-packaging elements that will help customers accelerate innovation and strengthen the semiconductor supply chain.”
The agreement’s initial term is five years, with provisions for capacity expansion as needs grow.
Volume production at the Malta facility is projected to ramp up during the first half of 2028.
Prior to this, Xanadu Quantum Technologies entered into a multi-year agreement with GlobalFoundries to boost production of components needed for utility-scale quantum computing.
Under the partnership, the two companies will collaborate on implementing Xanadu’s photonic technologies at GlobalFoundries’ 300mm manufacturing facility in Malta, New York.
