AMD and OpenAI have agreed to a 6 gigawatt (GW) deal that will see the ChatGPT developer use multiple generations of AMD Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs) for its upcoming AI infrastructure.

The deployment of the first 1GW, which will feature AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, is scheduled to start in the second half of 2026.

Under the terms of the agreement, OpenAI has selected AMD as its main strategic compute partner for large-scale rollouts.

The collaboration will begin with the MI450 series and expand into future GPU generations with support for rack-scale AI implementations.

This continues an existing working relationship that began with AMD’s MI300X and MI350X product series, with both companies confirming ongoing coordination on technical development and product integration.

AMD chair and CEO Dr Lisa Su said: “This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”

The agreement includes a warrant issued by AMD to OpenAI for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock.

Share vesting is structured around deployment milestones, starting with the first 1GW implementation and scaling up as cumulative purchases reach 6GW.

Vesting conditions also factor in specific AMD share price benchmarks and technical as well as commercial targets related to large-scale deployments by OpenAI.

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman said: “AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster.”

At a developer conference held on Monday 6 October 2025, OpenAI announced new industry partnerships, including integrations with Spotify, Zillow, and Mattel. The AI company also presented new application development tools for ChatGPT, reported Reuters.

In addition, ChatGPT users will gain access to interactive applications from multiple companies such as Booking.com, Expedia, Figma, Coursera, and Canva.

OpenAI is also introducing a preview of its Apps SDK for developers building within the ChatGPT environment.
