Pera Palace Hotel Agatha Restaurant

The Pera Palace Hotel opened in 1895 to provide luxury accommodation for the elite traveling to Istanbul on the newly extended Orient Express.

Restored and re-opened in 2010, this distinguished hotel remains a worthy destination for today’s Elite Traveler. Agatha Christie regularly visited the Pera Palace and was sufficiently inspired to write her bestseller ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. Guests have the option to stay in Christie’s favorite room, 411, where her diary was found hidden under the floorboards. The Agatha Christie restaurant pays tribute to three major destinations of the former Orient Express: Paris, Venice and Istanbul, and serves a blend of French, Italian and Turkish cuisine. Executive Chef Maximilian J.W. Thomae produces a new seasonal tasting menu every month. For relaxation, try the new Pera Spa, which offers a traditional Turkish bath of heady scented steams, silky soaps and invigorating body scrubs.

Le Fumior bar

Once the residence of Ottoman Sultans, the Çıragan Palace Kempinski opened as a hotel in 1990.

With its extensive gardens, the Palace is a peaceful oasis in the bustling city. Infused with artwork and creativity, including a ground floor art gallery, garden sculpture gallery, twicemonthly classical music concerts and regular book readings by renowned authors, the Çıragan Palace is as much of a destination as Istanbul. During summer, a unique gourmet barbeque of fresh seafood, lamb, beef and mezze specialities is provided. Cigar lovers will enjoy the outdoor Le Fumoir Bar, where quality cigars are served in handmade humidors and perfectly complemented with premium cognacs and quality malts. Çıragan Palace is a prime location for elite events: the ballroom can accommodate up to 1,000 guests and there are exhibition spaces for up to 300 and three private dining rooms.

Why we love it: On the second floor of this historical palace, the Sultan Suite guarantees discretion, with its own entrance, reception and a lounge where guests can enjoy breakfast, complimentary high afternoon tea, drinks and canapés in the utmost privacy. There are two large bedrooms with 65-inch LCD TVs, a kitchenette, dining area for 12 and two bathrooms. The Imperial-style furniture is Turkish and matches the suite’s colossal doors, ornate fireplaces and chandeliers. Replica Fausto Zonaro paintings are illuminated by 5.7 meter (18.7 foot) floor-to-ceiling windows. Ask your butler to run you a bath in the grand master bathroom with its handmade marble hamam, private steam room, rain shower and gold plated crystal faucets. Then float to sleep on the master bedroom’s air bed. The King of Spain, Juan Carlos II, and his wife Queen Sofia not to mention Bill Clinton have all stayed here.

A stunning example of neoclassical architecture, it is hard to believe that Four Seasons Sultanahmet was once a bleak Ottoman jailhouse for intellectual dissidents.

Located on Tevkifhane Sokak, ‘Jailhouse Street’, the Sultanahmet still bears the inscription Dersaadet Cinayet Tevkifhanesi, ‘Capital City Murder Jail’, on its main gate. The prison exercise yard has been reincarnated as an immaculate hotel courtyard with an elegant Seasons Restaurant glass pavilion serving afternoon tea. Just a stone’s throw away from the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, Four Seasons Sultanahmet is situated at the very heart of the city. A boutique hotel with only 65 guest rooms, the spa is exclusively for guests and has separate men’s and women’s saunas.

Why we love it: The Marmara Suite’s three private terraces present exceptional views of the historic city center. The suites high angled ceilings offer space to breath away from the bustling streets. The living room has a beautiful fireplace, 42-inch plasma screen TV and a writing desk. At the end of the day enjoy a relaxing meal in the suites private dining area before soaking in the bubbling whirlpool tub. The luxurious marble bathroom is replete with a steam shower and a 15-inch LCD television.

Why we love it: The décor of the suite is inspired by the Ottoman Empire. Interior designer Sinan Kafadar uses a tulip motif, which was a symbol of wealth in the Ottoman court. Süzer Plaza, Elmadag, Askerocagi Cad. No: 15 Sisli 34367

Originally an Ottoman raki distillery, this 19th century industrial complex has been transformed into a luxury hotel.

Owned by prominent Istanbul architects Mark and Nedret Butler, the renovation has been a family project as their daughter Yasha designed the sleek interiors. Although the makeover was dramatic, the historical integrity of the building has been maintained. Each room has been individually designed to showcase the original architectural features. Enjoy refreshments on the peaceful waterfront lawn, sample seafood in Kordon, the hotel’s restaurant or take a private excursion on the hotel’s own launch. Sumahan is located just outside Çengelköy, a village of wooden houses, fish restaurants and seaside promenades – and only a 15-minute boat ride from downtown Istanbul.

Why we love it: The ever-changing image of the Bosphorus under the shimmering Istanbul light is subtly reflected in the designer’s use of blues, purples and grays. Like portholes in a ship, a series of windows running the length of this suite capture bold snapshots of the river’s expanse. With a fireplace in the living room, luxury Turkish towels and a Hammam-style bathroom, a warm comfortable stay is ensured. The suite can be adjoined to a deluxe room.
