There are few actors in Hollywood at the moment who are quite so menacing as Jon Bernthal. From the unhinged Shane on The Walking Dead to master assassin Brax in The Accountant to gangster Griff in Baby Driver, Bernthal has made his career playing some pretty scary characters.

However, judging by a newly released teaser for The Punisher, Bernthal made have found his most threatening part yet.

In the series, Bernthal plays ‘The Punisher’, a crime-fighting vigilante who isn’t quite a superhero. The character first appeared in the second series of Netflix‘s Daredevil. We learn that Frank Castle was once a father who lost his family to organised crime and nearly died himself. After getting out of hospital, he became ‘The Punisher’. In this persona he’ll stop at nothing to destroy criminals, even if it means taking lives.

Thanks to the character’s popularity after his Daredevil role, he’ll be getting his own series later this year. Netflix just revealed the first teaser yesterday. Be warned, it’s pretty intense!

This isn’t the first teaser we’ve seen though. Netflix also released another hint at what’s to come on Twitter back in August:

So far though, details about The Punisher are shrouded in mystery. Netflix has told the world that the series is coming in ‘Fall 2017’, but when a fan asked for the actual release date, they tweeted:

However, we do know a few details about what we can expect from the latest Netflix superhero series.

The Punisher: what we know so far.

The official synopsis for the series is as follows:

“Frank Castle, known throughout New York City as “the Punisher” after exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his family, uncovers a larger conspiracy beyond what was done to him and his family.”

We also know that the story of the series will involve Frank Castle’s time as a soldier in Afghanistan. Ben Barnes will play Billy Russo, Castle’s best friend from his army days. He runs Anvil, a private military organisation, so he’s probably a bad ‘un!

Another major character in the series is Ebon Moss-Bachrach as David Lieberman / Micro. He’s sort of the Q to Castle’s 007, providing him with weaponry and gadgets. Amber Rose Revah will also appear in the series as Dinah Madani. She’s an original character created for the series who is a Homeland Security agent investigating the same Afghanistan case as Castle.

Finally, fans of Netflix’s Marvel series will recognise Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page. Page was a major character in Daredevil and The Defenders and became friends with Frank in the former. She’ll probably provide a supporting role.

Aside from that, and the fact that the series will be on Netflix, we don’t know much.

When will The Punisher be released?

We don’t have an official release date yet. However, we can speculate based on what Netflix has done before.

There are a few options for the release date. Netflix released Jessica Jones, another part of their TV Marvel universe, on 20th November 2015. They released Luke Cage, on 30th September 2016. It seems unlikely that the latter date will happen, considering the lack of promo so far and the fact that The Defenders just saw release in August.

In addition, Jessica Jones Season 2 just wrapped filming this month. This means it’s probably heading for the March release slot that Netflix have used for Daredevil Season Two and Iron Fist.

Therefore, it seems most likely that The Punisher will release around the 20th November. This would also leave plenty of time between it and the new series of Stranger Things which Netflix will want to headline October.
