Quantum Foundry Copenhagen and the Novo Nordisk Foundation have announced plans for a new 5,300m² quantum chip fabrication facility in Copenhagen, Denmark, scheduled to open in 2027.

The initiative is intended to advance the manufacturing of quantum chips, which are essential components in quantum computers, and to enhance Europe’s competitiveness in quantum technologies.

The facility will focus on developing and scaling advanced manufacturing equipment for next-generation quantum chips. This will support the commercialisation of the continent’s research in quantum science and contribute to building a resilient supply chain for quantum technology.

European Commission Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said: “Strengthening European capacity to develop and manufacture quantum chips is essential for our competitiveness, resilient supply chains and technological sovereignty.

“Building on the European Chips Act and the Quantum Europe Strategy, and looking ahead to the forthcoming Quantum Act, initiatives such as Quantum Foundry Copenhagen can contribute to the industrial ecosystem Europe needs to scale quantum technologies.”

Quantum Foundry Copenhagen, owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, specialises in developing proprietary tools, materials and processes for quantum chip production.

The new site will integrate laboratory space for the nanofabrication of quantum materials, advanced characterisation, testing, chip assembly and packaging, as well as facilities for ultra-high vacuum manufacturing.

The company plans to offer wafer fabrication services to quantum technology suppliers worldwide.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has committed more than DKr2.9bn ($451m) to quantum technology initiatives, including the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The programme seeks to develop Denmark’s first fully functional fault-tolerant quantum computer before 2034, and the new chip facility will collaborate closely with it.

The establishment of the facility comes amid wider efforts by Denmark and the European Union to strengthen quantum innovation and industrial capacity. These efforts include the Quantum Europe Strategy, the anticipated Quantum Act, and Denmark’s own forthcoming national quantum strategy.
