Notably, the number of future of work-related patent applications in the technology industry was 20,200 in Q4 2023, versus 30,211 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 6% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Samsung Group filed the most future of work patents within the technology industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 276 future of work-related patents in the quarter, compared with 396 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Hitachi with 256 future of work patent filings, Fanuc (235 filings), and Mitsubishi Electric (227 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 42% share of total patent filings

The largest share of future of work related patent filings in the technology industry in Q4 2023 was in China with 42%, followed by the US (21%) and Japan (8%). The share represented by China was 13% lower than the 55% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
