The global technology industry experienced a 2% decline in patent filings in Q3 2023 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of grants dropped by 8%, resulting in overall patent publications decreasing by 2.3%, according to GlobalData’s Patent Analytics. Notably, the number of patent applications in the technology industry was 268,006 in Q3 2023, versus 274,340 in the prior quarter. Filings were down 15% year-on-year and decrease 2% quarter-on-quarter. This compares to a 15% year-on-year decrease in patent grants and 2% decline in quarter-on-quarter.
Most patenting activity has been in the Communications sector, where the number of patents filed Q2 2023 was 31144, a drop of 7% versus the previous quarter. The second-largest patent count was in MOS Micro (MPU, MCU & DSP) (27511, up 1%) and then Wireless Networking in third (25604, down 9%).
The top five companies accounted for 9% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that the largest number of patents filed over the last quarter was by Samsung Group with 9,213, followed by Huawei Investment with 6,945 and Qualcomm with 3,616.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 43% share of total patent filings
The largest share of patent filings in the technology industry in Q3 2023 was in China with 43%, followed by the US (20%) and Japan (6%). The share represented by China was 5% higher than the 38% share it accounted for in Q2 2023.
