The global technology industry experienced a 5% decline in patent filings in Q1 2024 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of grants dropped by 3%, resulting in overall patent publications decreasing by 5.8%, according to GlobalData’s Patent Analytics. Notably, the number of patent applications in the technology industry was 281,762 in Q1 2024, versus 298,938 in the prior quarter. Filings were down 4% year-on-year and increase 5% quarter-on-quarter. This compares to a 4% year-on-year increase in patent grants and 5% decline in quarter-on-quarter.

Most patenting activity has been in the Communications sector, where the number of patents filed Q4 2023 was 31970, a drop of 8% versus the previous quarter. The second-largest patent count was in Wireless Networking (27050, down 6%) and then Image Management in third (25110, down 1%).

The top five companies accounted for 10% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that the largest number of patents filed over the last quarter was by Samsung Group with 10,530, followed by Huawei Investment with 6,926 and Qualcomm with 4,630.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 43% share of total patent filings

The largest share of patent filings in the technology industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 43%, followed by the US (19%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by China was 0.77% lower than the 44% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
