Veeam Software has launched the Veeam Sovereign Service Providers Program, a new global initiative to help customers identify local service providers powered by its data protection technology.

The phased programme aims to address increasing demands for data sovereignty by pairing Veeam’s technical offerings with the expertise of regional partners.

The initial phase of the programme introduces the Data Sovereignty Competency within the Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) scheme.

This competency is designed to allow customers to find service providers that have met Veeam’s distinct criteria across operational, technological, legal, and governance areas.

Eligible providers must evidence their ability to deliver services through local operating models, employ in-region staff, demonstrate jurisdictional control, enable customer oversight, offer strong data governance processes, and maintain resilient data protection.

The competency is intended to complement, rather than replace, organisations’ own legal and risk assessments.

The move comes as governments and regulators increasingly mandate rules related to data residency, access, control, and jurisdiction.

New and developing regulations, along with growing geopolitical uncertainty and widespread adoption of AI, are prompting scrutiny of data storage, accessibility, and applicable legal frameworks.

According to Veeam, organisations are becoming more attentive to data sovereignty, extending beyond public sector or highly regulated industries.

Recent findings from Veeam indicated that 70% of companies acknowledge AI workflows are interacting with sensitive data without full oversight. In addition, 67% report the creation of autonomous AI workflows outside the full visibility of IT departments.

In light of these trends, both strong data governance and local operational control are seen as priorities.

Veeam global partnerships senior vice president Michelle Graff said: “Sovereignty is defined by each customer’s regional government, legal, regulatory and operational requirements. Meeting those requirements depends on both technology and the way a service is operated.

“The Veeam Sovereign Service Providers Program brings those two dimensions together. Veeam provides the technical foundation for resilient data protection, while trusted local partners contribute sovereign operating models, governance expertise, and established in-market capabilities.

“The VCSP Data Sovereignty Competency gives customers a clearer way to identify providers that have invested in both.”

Only providers who meet the stated competency requirements will be designated as such, and customers will be able to find approved partners through Veeam’s partner profiles, which will display data sovereignty status and regional coverage.

This competency is the first component of the larger Veeam Sovereign Service Providers Program, with further offerings planned for later in the year.
