WRITER, an AI platform focused on enterprise users, has launched a new method for watermarking AI-generated text that provides companies with greater control over how their digital content is identified and tracked.

The system introduces invisible, machine-readable watermarks that are unique to each customer organisation when using text produced by WRITER’S Palmyra models.

For customers based in the European Union (EU), text watermarking will be activated automatically and set to comply with the EU AI Act.

Clients outside the EU will have the option to enable watermarking and adjust its parameters according to specific business requirements.

Traditional industry approaches to AI-generated content watermarking often rely on marking content so that its origin can be traced back to the large language model (LLM) provider, potentially overlooking the role played by enterprises in shaping the output.

WRITER’S method embeds an enterprise-specific mark, reflecting input such as brand voice, customer data, business context, and compliance standards.

WRITER CEO and co-founder May Habib said: “Enterprises don’t want their model providers making their AI decisions for them. They want ownership, control, and configurability, right down to how and when their AI-generated content is watermarked.

“The labs’ hatchet approach to watermarking is just the latest proof that they don’t get the enterprise. They checked the compliance box without a second thought about how customers wanted their content marked. We’ve built hand-in-hand with the enterprise for six years and that partnership has shaped a very different roadmap.”

With this system, enterprises can not only turn watermarking on or off but also customise it for specific use cases, subject to regulatory guidelines.

The watermark is created by subtly steering the model’s word choices, embedding a pattern that is not visible to the human eye but detectable by machines.

WRITER customers can adjust watermark strength, balancing detection reliability and content quality.

Stronger watermarking may be used for regulated communication, such as by banks or pharmaceutical companies, while marketing teams may prioritise content quality over detection.

The platform provides options to apply watermarks to certain types of content while excluding others.

The multi-bit watermarking process enables embedding additional custom information, such as marketing or campaign identification, within the text. This function allows customers to trace content reach and distribution, supporting campaign tracking initiatives within their organisations.
