Google has partnered with NV Energy to use geothermal energy to create more sustainable data centres. The partnership is currently under review by the state of Nevada’s energy regulators.
The partnership will see Google receive a clean transition tariff to support its use of green energy. Google stated that it hoped to become completely carbon neutral by 2030.

If approved, the partnership will allow Google significantly more access to geothermal energy, increasing from 3.5 megawatts to 115 megawatts in six years.
“NV Energy and Google’s partnership to develop new solutions to bring clean, firm energy technology — like enhanced geothermal — onto Nevada’s grid at this scale is remarkable,” stated NV Energy’s president and CEO, Doug Cannon.
A 2024 tech sentiment survey conducted by research and analysis company GlobalData found that over 60% of businesses believed AI would pose a disruption to their sector in the next 12 months.
Google has already invested around $4bn towards the expansion of its US data centre infrastructure to meet rising compute needs.
