At its annual ‘Zoomtopia’ conference in September 2025, Zoom showcased the latest and greatest upcoming features for its Workplace platform.

In an ironic twist, the theme for 2025 was ‘For The People’ but the people weren’t invited. This year’s event was radically slimmed down, spanning only a couple of hours and featuring a virtual audience.

However, the truncated proceedings at Zoomtopia 2025 could be well justified. The cost of sponsoring multi-day conferences hosting huge numbers of participants is astronomical.

Presumably, the powers that be at Zoom have chosen to dedicate more dollars to adding AI functionality to the platform rather than on lavish events. It has been money well spent. Zoom has rapidly accumulated AI features, changing the fundamental nature of the platform and allowing it to keep pace with rivals.

Zoomtopia takeaways

Zoom ignited a renaissance with the October 2023 introduction of Zoom AI Companion, a digital assistant that leveraged GenAI to extend everyday capabilities such as generating action items and meeting summaries. In 2024, Zoom AI Companion 2.0 was introduced, which surfaces information across the Zoom platform, allowing users to take definitive action.

AI Companion 3.0, expected to be generally available in November 2025, was the centerpiece of all the announcements. It brings agentic AI capabilities that work across the Zoom platform as well as compatible third-party integrations. It can understand users’ specific context, priorities, and goals to help them accomplish what they need to and quickly. A few features of AI Companion 3.0 are well worth noting.

Existing note-taking capabilities will be extended to cover meetings conducted in Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Cisco Webex. With an agentic retrieval feature, users will be able to search across Zoom as well as Google and Microsoft environments. These features are just two examples of Zoom Workplace being stretched to incorporate other platforms; there are others. Expected in October 2025, Zoom will launch a native AI Companion experience in Slack, followed shortly by Microsoft Teams.

Expected to arrive in December 2025, Zoom will enable AI Companion and Now Assist Agents from ServiceNow to work together to help contact center agents. Expected in September 2025, contact center agents who use Zoom will be able to access real-time transcription, unified routing, and AI assistant technology available in Salesforce Service Cloud. With links to external environments, Zoom is converting the Workplace platform from an island of collaboration into a centralised hub for work.

More to come

Zoom unveiled a feature specifically targeted at businesses, expected in January 2026, adding agentic AI to the prospecting capability in Zoom Revenue Accelerator, its sales intelligence tool. AI will be leveraged to determine the right prospects and connect with them at the right time, engage leads via email and text with personalised messaging, and schedule meetings with prospects.

As Zoom succinctly puts it, “Build pipeline while you sleep.” By continuing to regularly augment the platform while broadening the types of customers it serves (both consumer and business) as well as establishing associations with other platforms, Zoom is poised to continue its renaissance.
