Seattle, the north-eastern US city in the state of Washington has battling against a high cost of living and elevated business expenses.

According to the Council on Economic and Community Relations, Seattle is 24 percent more expensive than the average US city. A three-bedroom house in the metro Seattle area now costs roughly $500,000, up 26 percent since 2010.

Despite the city’s high prices — which pale in comparison to it’s west coast rival San Francisco — Seattle is still attracting all manor of startups attracting more than $1.2bn in venture funding in the last year.

The home of Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, and Costco, the city gets high marks for strong performances by its companies, and it scores high on payroll and personal-income growth, and high education levels.

Unemployment is a low 4.8 percent. As of 1 January 2017, the minimum wage in Seattle went up from $10.50 to $13 per hour and by 2021 the minimum for all employees will be $15 per hour.
