Europe’s technology industry sees a rise of 23.5% in deal activity in May 2019

Europe’s technology industry saw a rise of 23.5% in deal activity during May 2019, when compared with the last 12-month average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 379 technology industry deals worth $7.58bn were announced for the region in May 2019, against the 12-month average of 307 deals.

Of all the deal types, venture financing saw most activity in May 2019 with 194 transactions, representing a 51.2% share for the region.

In second place was M&A with 146 deals, followed by private equity deals with 39 transactions, respectively capturing a 38.5% and 10.3% share of the overall deal activity for the month.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading category in Europe’s technology industry with $6.29bn, while private equity and venture financing deals totalled $664.53m and $623.78m, respectively.

Europe technology industry deals in May 2019: Top deals

The top five technology deals accounted for 71.2% of the overall value during May 2019.

The combined value of the top five technology deals stood at $5.39bn, against the overall value of $7.58bn recorded for the month. The top announced technology deal tracked by GlobalData in May 2019 was Ion Investment Group’s $1.76bn acquisition of Acuris Group.

In second place was the $1.57bn acquisition of Iliad TowerCo by Cellnex Telecom and in third place was Cellnex Telecom’s $783.55m acquisition of Salt TowerCo.

The $671.62m acquisition of Iliad Italia TowerCo by Cellnex Telecom and Asterion Industrial Infra Fund I’s private equity deal with Telefonica for $615.65m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
