A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11887278B2) discloses a method and system for training a neural network using a laser scanner equipped with a color camera. The method involves scanning an environment to generate scan point cloud data, creating a training data set of point clouds, and generating 2D images for closed and non-closed surface point clouds. These images are used to train the neural network to identify and fill gaps in target objects. The trained neural network then fills the gaps between scan points based on color information and de-noises the scan point cloud data to produce a closed surface image.

The patent also includes claims related to the identification and filling of gaps between foreground pixels in the scan point cloud data, overwriting background pixels to fill the gaps, using a convolutional neural network for training, performing de-noising in near real-time, and generating two-and-a-half-dimensional (2.5D) images. The system described in the patent comprises a processor and memory with instructions for performing the scanning, generating training data, training the neural network, filling gaps, and de-noising the scan point cloud data. The system is designed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of gap identification and filling in target objects within the scanned environment, ultimately enhancing the quality of the generated closed surface image.
