Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the technology industry was 18,490 in Q1 2024, versus 20,865 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 9% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Huawei Investment filed the most cybersecurity patents within the technology industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 436 cybersecurity-related patents in the quarter, compared with 544 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Qualcomm with 392 cybersecurity patent filings, Samsung Group (372 filings), and Apple (225 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 41% share of total patent filings
The largest share of cybersecurity related patent filings in the technology industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 41%, followed by the US (32%) and Japan (4%). The share represented by China was 9% lower than the 50% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
