Perhaps the most important stop of the tour, Trump’s visit to Brussels was vital to reassure the other Nato members that the US was, in fact, as committed to the alliance as it has always been.

Trump’s demand for the other Nato members to live up to their financial commitments, while not entirely incorrect or unreasonable, has not met with much favour in Europe and his previous assertions that he may withdraw the US from an alliance he has described as obsolete left many wondering how a Trump meeting with Nato would actually go.

As it turns out, about as you’d expect.

Haranguing those members not paying their fare dues, he also conflated the threat of terrorism with immigration in a way many of the other Nato members would probably avoid and captured the attention of the internet when he shoved the prime minister of Montenegro out of the way to get to the front of the formal summit photograph.

Perhaps most concerning however, the president broke with tradition and refused to explicitly endorse Article 5, the promise of mutual assistance to fellow Nato countries that has seen more than 1000 non-American soldiers die on behalf of the US’s way in Afghanistan.

The allies also found a sticking point over Russia, although the issues of Ukraine and counter-terrorism seem to have played out better.
