There are various issues that are likely to come under questioning in relation to Trump’s specific outlook but perhaps most notable will be attempts to entice him into guaranteeing the US’s continuing compliance with the Paris Agreement on climate change.
It is hoped that the assembled nations will be able to shift Trump on some of his stauncher “America First” policies into an outlook that is of greater cooperative benefit. There seems to be ana acknowledgement however, that dealing with the new president will not be quite the same as approaches to his predecessors.
One diplomat said to the Guardian:
We need to show a degree of humility. In foreign policy terms, the second half of Trump’s 100 days were immeasurably better than the first half, recognisably Republican. The trick is to make sure he does not feel cornered, and if you have an idea, make him feel it is his idea, and in America’s interest. At the same time, we need to get some commitments from him.
