5. Climate Change and food security

Security of food supplies remains vulnerable to climate change resulting from greenhouse gas emissions.
The deleterious effects of rising temperatures on agriculture and the security of food are legion.
Food supplies in large areas of the globe are at high risk of collapsing and those countries most dependent on agriculture are typically of heightened sensitivity to climate change.
Crop yields in many regions are already suffering and whilst genetically modified (GM) crops are in development, many unknowns as to the efficacy and side effects of GM food remain.
These problems are compounded by political sensitivity to the changing agricultural business environment, frequently resulting in economic upheaval.
