AI startup Scale AI announced on Tuesday (22 May) that it had raised $1bn in Series F funding, valuing the GenAI and large language model (LLM) labelling company at $13.8bn.

The US startup, newly backed by tech giants Meta and Amazon, has played a vital role in the rise of GenAI with its labelling system.

Scale AI labels data being fed into AI systems, including text, video and audio, so it can effectively train advanced AI systems.

The company began labelling data used in AI models that power autonomous driving, however, the startup has now evolved into improving the data global enterprises need to implement AI.

Founder and CEO Alexandr Wang said: “Our calling is to build the data foundry for AI, and with today’s funding, we’re moving into the next phase of that journey – accelerating the abundance of frontier data that will pave our road to AGI.”

The Department of Defence Chief Digital and AI Office presented a contract to the company in August, Scale AI said it will boost the DoD’s mission to advance AI in the military.

CEO Wang said the nation’s ability to adopt and implement AI will define future warfare.

“I firmly believe that the US has the ability to lead the world in AI adoption to support US national security. The world is not slowing down, and we must rise to the occasion,” Wang said at the US AI Insight Forum in December.
